Hardwood Floor "Styles and Trends" by Nikzad Import Inc.
Hardwood Floor "Styles and Trends" by Nikzad Import Inc.
"The traditional ever-popular unfinished oak "strip" hard wood flooring, whether nail down or glue down (Engineered) Prefinished or unfinished-OAK is still the leading species used in the United States for new construction and remodeling. Also with OAK being the top preference for most builders."
"Hardwood Floor Magazine reported Red Oak accounted for 50%+ of Distributor sales. The newest request are being made for cherry, birch, White Oak, maple, and exotic species from around the World. Distributors are seeing a growing demand in the request for custom-made borders and accents. This trend is in part because most builders and homeowners like to differentiate themselves to what is common place and what everyone else is using. Mixed Media is also becoming more and more popular."
"Bamboo flooring also is enjoying a new popularity with the West Coast and Southeast leading the country in this new trend."
"kitchens and hardwood floors are becoming more and more common place"
"hardwood floors account for about 7% of the flooring market. One of the larger wood flooring producers predicts that share will double in the next five years"
"Today manufacturers make many sizes, designs, varieties, and species of wood flooring. As the industry has grown, with new technologies, a wider variety has made the industry produce many precision-made products of enduring beauty manufactured and graded according to certified standards and grading rules. Today's engineered products now allows wood floors to be placed directly on concrete slabs and below grade installations."
"Wood flooring can be broken into 3 major groups: unfinished, prefinished and acrylic impregnated, solid or engineered, as to their manufacturing process. Each having there own sizes, colors, and species."
"These products are graded by appearance and cut. Select and Better (S&B) is the standard grade used in the industry. Grades lower are #1 and #2 common. Rift and quartered are cuts above the S & B grade."
"PreFinished Wood Floors (finish is applied at the factory) are becoming more and more popular in today's market place. It's ability to go over concrete, various colors and ease of installation and less down time than unfinished products has made it more in demand than ever. These products already stained and finished in the factory, along with new technologies (engineered) has made these products less effected by moisture and will not shrink or swell as much as its solid unfinished counter parts. This new technology has made for better urethane adhesives, adding to this products stability over a concrete slab. Extra care must be taken to avoid damage during installation."
"Wood Flooring Contractors reported recently in a survey by Hardwood Floors Magazine, that 71% of wood floor related work was remodeling projects, while the remaining 29% was in new construction. They also reported Contractors are selling 76% unfinished, vs 23% going to Prefinished Engineered and Prefinished solid."

Why Choose Unfinished Hardwood Flooring
Why Choose Unfinished Hardwood Flooring
Many people choose unfinished flooring because they desire the ultra clean seamless look of sanded & finished flooring. Or they may be hand scraping, hewing, or distressing on site. Job site finished floors are the finest floors money can buy. This is when finish is applied AFTER the flooring is installed. Whether the floor is sanded flat or hand scraped, planed, or distressed on site, it is nearly impossible to match this look with factory pre-finished flooring. With unfinished hardwood flooring borders and elaborate inlays are possible. Unfinished floors can be stained to match or contrast existing decor. For expert opinions on hardwood flooring finish go to Floormasters.com.
Pro's of Finishing Floors On Site
- "Perfect floor" can be achieved, Looks Amazing!
- You choose bevel, v-grooves, or square edge
- Floor is sealed
- Longer Lengths
- Wider Planks
- Patterns, Inlays, Medallions, Stone, etc. can be laid into the hardwood flooring
- Choose stain, color option, and finish (more environment friendly finishes possible)
- Finish with Solvent/Oil or Water Based Poly-Urethane, "Swedish" Finishes, Natural Oils, Natural Waxes
- Hand Scrape On Site
- Add several coats of finish, commercial finish possible also
Con's of Unfinished Hardwood Flooring
- Job takes longer. Often, only one coat of finish can be applied per day
- Dusty Environment. Dustless systems have some dust emission and are more costly
- EVERYONE MUST STAY OFF THE FLOOR. Hence, all work must stop until dry
- Non-professionals, rushing contractor, or distracting contractor may cause imperfect finish
- Odor can be strong and lingers for a few hours to a few days
- Not good for people with allergies to be around floor until it "breaths" for awhile
- More money
Most of us grew up on these types of floors and know that they can stand up to anything. Solid site finished oak, maple, cherry, walnut, pine, fir and hickory flooring are part of american heritage and we believe that these floors are still the best floor for your money. A simple refinish with a surface coating from one of today's leading poly-urethane companies will always impress the masses. If you are in new construction or doing and addition we recommend buying some of our unfinished long length strip or wide plank hardwood flooring. We have great prices on some of the longest wood floor material you can find.
Site Finished Glossary
- Water Based Urethane - Water is used as part of the chemical make up of the polyurethane finish.
- Oil/Solvent Based Urethane - Generally the most common hardwood floor finish, known for being easy to apply. It is a solvent-base polyurethane that dries in about six-twelve hours. Oil based urethanes offer a hard mar-proof surface that will not crack, chip, or peel. Usually available in gloss, semi-gloss, and satin sheen levels. This finish tends to amber with age.
- Moisture Cured Urethane - MCU's are the ultimate in wood floor surface protection. Similar to oil/solvent based urethanes but, this finish needs the moisture in the air to cure. MCU will retain gloss longer than any other finish and is more durable and more moisture resistant than other surface finishes. Ambering and Non-ambering available. These finishes are best left to the professional.
- Natural Oil - Tung Oil, Vegetable Oil, and Linseed Oil are common oil finishes. All provide their own unique benefits and maintenance instructions.
- Wax - Liquid or paste wax

Why Choose Pre-finished Hardwood Flooring
Why Choose Pre-finished Hardwood Flooring
Pre-finished hardwood flooring take away from messy sanding jobs that take several days after installation to finish and dry. They generally have harder more durable finishes applied at the factory. They are very well made and offer a beautiful floor guaranteed to last for years. Most factory finished hardwood floors have 6-10 coats of a ultra-violet cured urethane applied to the wood's surface. Also, recently, Aluminum and Ceramic particles are added directly to the floor's finish by manufacturers, which dramatically increases the life of the urethane finish.
Pro's of Pre-finished Hardwood Flooring
* More Durable / More Scratch Resistant
* Saves Time
* Usually Saves Money
* Looks Great
* Can be Refinished if Wear Layer is Thick enough (1/8 inch minimum)
* Comes Engineered and Solid
* Cleans Easily
* 10-25 Year Finish Warranties
Con's of Pre-finished Hardwood Flooring
* Slightly longer installation time due to necessity not to scratch finish
* Generally shorter average lengths of flooring
* Refinished aluminum/ceramic oxide is caustic and more costly
* Micro-Beveled
* Can't make custom borders and inlays
* Can't be recoated must be sanded and refinished with polyurethane, oil, or wax.
All in all we think that buying pre-finished is the customer's choice depending on needs and life circumstances. We believe that factory finishes are generally very durable and make great floors for living on without the need to worry about scratches and maintenance. Vacuuming and Sweeping a few times per week. Mopping is recommended weekly to keep the floors looking great. We recommend using the manufacturers suggested cleaning product. However, Bona Cleaning Products work for almost all urethane pre-finished floors.
Pre-Finished Glossary
* Factory Finished Hardwood Flooring - Wood floors that have been factory finished before they are installed.
* UV-Cured - these floors are finished at the factory and the polyurethane finish are cured with Ultra Violet lights instead of using heat.
* Polyurethane - A clear, tough and durable finish that is applied as a wear layer.
* Acrylic-Urethane - Has a slightly different chemical make up than polyurethane, but with similar benefits.
* Ceramic Oxide - Advanced finish technology that allows the use of space-age ceramics to increase the abrasion resistance of the wear layer.
* Aluminum Oxide - particles added to the polyurethane finish to increase the abrasion resistance of the wear layer. This has become extremely popular on the better grades of hardwood floors.
* Acrylic Impregnated - Acrylic monomers are injected into the cell structure of the wood to give increased hardness and then finished with a wear layer over the wood.

Zanella Floors of Wood
Zanella Floors of Wood
Want your hardwood floors done right? Going for that Hardwood look but don't know who to turn to? These are questions that can drive anyone insane. You need the Hardwood Maniac. Serving you in your search for perfection. Check us out and sample the many brand names we have to offer. For example: Zanella Floors of Wood.
Interested in hand crafted, artistically designed hardwood flooring. Look no further than Zanella Floors of wood. These handcrafted, antique designed floors will leave your home breathtaking. With Zanella's 21 step procedure you can add a unique, vintage surface to compliment your living environment. Zanella offers quality protected floors that with their urethane finish gives you years of satisfaction with very little maintenance.
The floors are designed for those who want elegance. Not your run of the mill do it yourself alternative. Unique in design. Spawned from nature. Allowing for an individual look to suit your taste.
Zanella uses methods from the olden days and crafted by hand so that detail lends itself to it's beauty.
Eco safe and mother nature friendly to give your home the natural look it deserves.
Installation of these floors is not diffucult, anyone with professing knowledge of the floor laying process can have you up and walking on the floor in no time. Doesn't your home deserve this?
Why not customize your home with an array of Zanella's fine products to give your feet a gift that will make you want to dance the night away in the privacy of your own home. Ranging from parts for the stairs, boarders, herring bone, round or square pegging and of course custom parquets.
Choose from an assortment of styles for example the Pecan/Hickory or "Fumoso" that gives your home an earthly tone.
Or a lighten Cremoso look accentuating the look of spring. A new birth to your domain.
The Carbonella, from the old family secrets will give your home the look of Rome. With it's red tint, walnut heavy style. A very powerful expression.
For something not as dramatic but still with a punch, Bruna might be your cup of tea.
And the baby of Zanella's Walnut collection is the Dolce. Very easy on the eyes.
The Grano follows the Cremoso style. Part of the White Oak Collection. Very inviting. And the more bolder of these is the Castanegra. Ever thought of visiting a castle in Europe? Why not bring it to you?
Back to the Hickory/Pecan the Robusto does what the name implies. Relying on it's vibrant natural look to suit your home. The Terrano gives your home an ageless look T for time. Blending the more timeless colors of wood.
And Zanella's last group to choose from is there Plainsawn White Oak collection. These prized selections begin with Alluro, sweet like the honey tone it is derived from. If it's more of a golden look you desire? Try the Branzata, a color rich in tapestry that King Midas himself would walk barefoot on. And last but certainly not least I recommend the Daro. The darkness of the wood calls out the stages of Shakespeare. A pressence any actor would kneel upon.
Hickory/Pecan, Walnut, Rift and Quartered White Oak, Plainsawn White Oak. The styles that make Zanella, Zanella. Isn't it time you did something for your home? Don't your feet deserve a gift. Why walk on an ordinary surface when you can glide through the luxury that is Zanella. Hardwood Maniac can show you the way.
